"NYAOPE" (WHOONGA)

 

A drug mixture unique to South Africa which consiste of a mixture of low grade heroin, marijuana, cleaning detergents, rat poison, chlorine and sometimes HIV antiretroviral medication [ARVs] 

It's sold as bags of white powder and is usually added to dagga and smoked as a joint.

 

One version of the claim is that whoonga contains classic psychoactive drugs such as cannabis,[methamphetamine or heroin potentiated by interactions with the antiretroviral ritonavir. Another is that the drug contains efavirenz (alone or with the ingredients mentioned above), which supposedly has psychoactive side effects.

 

At the moment 'Nyope' is NOT illegal in South Africa although it may contain illegal substances.
